PPP files appeals against Benazir Bhutto murder case judgment

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Monday filed three appeals against the verdict of Benazir Bhutto murder case,

The appeals were submitted in a District and Sessions Court in Rawalpindi.

Speaking to media, PPP lawyer Latif Khosa said that the appeals have been filed against former military dictator general (retd) Pervez Musharraf along with Rafaqat Hussain and Aitzaz Shah.

It is pertinent to state that Hussain and Shah were acquitted by the court in the case.

He added that the statement of Benazir Bhutto’s friend Mark Siegel was recorded via video link.

Khosa added that Benazir had written, in her letter, that former military dictator Pervez Musharraf would be responsible if anything happened to her.

“Musharraf had given threats to her,” Khosa added.

He went on to say that no security was provided to the former prime minister.

The lawyer stated that the ex-PPP chairman was shot at point-blank range.

An Anti-Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi on 31st August had announced the verdict of Benazir Bhutto murder case in which Pervez Musharraf was declared a proclaimed offender.

ATC has also ordered the authorities to seize all of Musharraf’s assets.

ATC has also handed a 17-year imprisonment sentence to ex-deputy inspector general (DIG) Saud Aziz and ex-superintendent of police (SP) Khurram Shahzad.

According to FIA officials, Saud Aziz was a facilitator of the crime as he did not provide security to Benazir Bhutto.

Saud Aziz’s lawyer contended in the court that conducting postmortem of Benazir was not the responsibility of former CPO Saud Aziz, adding Zardari had not allowed him to carry out postmortem of BB.

Five suspects, allegedly affiliated with Taliban, namely Rafaqat Hussain, Hasnain Gul, Rasheed Ahmed, Sher Zaman and Aitzaz Shah were set free due to lack of evidence.

PPP chairperson and former PM Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a suicide attack on December 27, 2007 after addressing a public meeting at Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi.
